Cabo San Lucas has no shortage of oceanfront restaurants aimed squarely at tourists, but some of the best food near El Tezal is a short walk from the gates — no reservation, no view surcharge, just genuinely good tacos. Here’s where we send our guests.

La Taquiza

La Taquiza Centro is a local favorite for a reason. The asada (steak), costilla (rib meat), and arrachera (flank steak) tacos are well-seasoned, fresh, and generously portioned — as good for a late afternoon snack as they are for dinner. From the Amaterra gates, turn right, then right again at the restaurant; it’s about a five-minute walk.

Tacos Gardenias

Winner of a 2025 Travelers’ Choice award, Tacos Gardenias has been serving Mexican home-style cooking for more than 30 years. The taco variety is genuinely wide — fish and shrimp, cochinita pibil, nopales, chicharrón, barbacoa, and chicken — but ask for the Shrimp Molcajete, prepared with salsa, onion, and cheese, if you want the dish people come back for. Round it out with ceviche, seafood soup, tortilla soup, or a shrimp cocktail. You’ll find it at P.º de La Marina L31, El Médano Ejidal.

Metate

For something a step up, Metate holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand — the guide’s nod to exceptional food at a reasonable price. The menu centers on antojitos and meats grilled over a wood fire, and the standout is the Tacos Baja: blue corn tortillas topped with flaky white fish in a squid-ink batter and finely shredded pickled cabbage. It’s as visually striking as it is good.
